Halloween can be a great time for children of all ages.  However, every year we see children injured from this holiday.  There are several measures every parent should take to avoid injuries with Halloween festivities.  Make sure costumes are bright and reflective for nighttime trick or treating.  Consider costumes that don’t have masks that may impair a child’s vision.  Be sure that open flames never come near your child’s costume.  Flame resistant costumes are available, so check the labels carefully.  Drawing on a pumpkin is a much safer alternative for children than carving.  Children should always be accompanied by an adult for trick or treating.  Make sure your children know the plan if they become separated during trick or treating.  Parents should be in charge of the candy.  Make sure to inspect all candy before allowing your children to consume it.  For more tips, see the American Academy of Pediatrics website here.
